This term the year 5s have been focusing on what life was like in 1854. The topic was the Hard Road ahead.

Life in the 1850s was really hard because people came overseas to Ballarat to find there fortune but most of them couldn’t find jobs and if they chose to be a miner they couldn’t find gold because it’s really hard.

So then they had to introduce miners licences, they cost 3 shillings and they did this because the government thought it wasn’t ok for people to come from overseas seas dig up all there gold and then leave. Another reason was they were hoping some miners would leave, but it just made them angrier and this is how the Eureka Rebellion started, when the Miners burnt there licences at the Eureka Hotel and then the Eureka hotel burnt down. And it lead up to the Eureka Stockade.

When 30 Men died.

We also went on a camp to Sovereign Hill and went to a dress up school and learnt about what is was like to be a kid on the goldfields and our teacher told all the girls that they shouldn’t marry a miner because they very inconsistent with how much money they Bring to the family. Because maybe one week you will have nothing to eat at all.

Some important dates are;

3rd December 1854, when the Eureka Stockade was held.

7th October 1854, year when the miners burnt there licences outside the Eureka Hotel.

7th October 1854, when James Scobie died.

The class was assigned with a partner and we had to make a diorama last f one of the buildings at Sovereign Hill. Me and my partner chose the New York bakery. I don’t see the hot glue to to make the tables inside, (well l did burn myself) l did the wallpaper inside and cut the box so it was nice and even.

What building did you make for your diorama.

Christian.
